Both the places are two main centres of trade in South India and date several centuries old. While Mahabalipuram is an ancient port town in Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry is the capital of the Union Territory of Pondicherry. Mahabalipuram is distinctly noted for its high religious reverence. It hosts an array of some very old temples that reflect the architectural feat of South India in the ancient era. Places like the stone temples and the ancient stone carvings need a special mention. They were built between 7th and 9th centuries, and simply worth visiting. Apart from that, the place also exhibits the best of authentic hospitality of Tamil Nadu, which is an attribute that has long fascinated the backpackers.

Pondicherry on the other hand is best known for its French influence. At one point of time, it was the largest French colony on Indian mainland. Even after many decades since the French left the place, it still retains the essence of the bygone era in the form of old churches, weathered buildings, and several other crumbling structures. The slow pace of life here simply gets you hooked with the city. Plus, not to forget, the sumptuous ethnic food that still reflects the eating habits of French, is must relish.
